Petals & Poison: Get to know the face behind the brand

Updated: Apr 9

Hello my dearest guests,

My name is Jená, and I am the owner, mind, and creator behind Petals & Poison. I wanted to take my first blog post as an opportunity for you to get to know a little bit about who I am and my mission behind Petals & Poison.

First things first, let me talk about the brand. Petals & Poison specializes in Gothic Victorian inspired items such as the original "Into the Unknown" Candle Rings," Mourning Brew" Tea Blends, and the coveted "Nu Antiques". Petals & Poison was brought to life from my love of gothic romance. I wanted to start creating pieces that would be considered a “Nu Antique” due to the feeling that the modern world has lost sight of the beauty nostalgia brings. Most products offered are designed to be heirlooms to ensure that they could be passed down from generation to generation. The "Mourning Brew" Tea Blends are inspired by many things including the Victorian Mourning Era, the Edwardian Era, and many other unique themes. All Tea blends are made and packed with love and in small quantities to ensure freshness. My mission is to create a world of fantasy and escapism through high quality, luxury items that my customers will receive at a fair price.

As for myself, my brand is an excellent representation of what I hold dear to my heart. I love all things romantic, gothic, victorian, historical, and whimsical. Tea is such a huge part of my life and it has extreme sentimental value to me. I grew up with my Dad's side being from the Bakersfield area and sweet tea was always available at family gatherings. And when it ran out, more would be immediately made. I found myself getting into the habit of drinking black tea practically every day because of this. While for my Mom's side, (them being from the Philippines), I was also brought up with asian style teas. I remember my very first experience with hot tea was from my Mom. When I was little, she would take me with her to work and she would make a strawberry black tea with cream and sugar. The packaging had a beautiful Geisha on it and behind her was a stunning jade green background. I wish I could find the brand, because it was delicious! Because of the nostalgia and how tea = love for me, creating tea blends really was a natural progression for my business.

When I was in my early 20's (I'm 28 now), my friends and I found a new obsession in visiting Tea Rooms. I am extremely blessed to have friends who share similar tastes with me and are down to try new things! This of course inspired me to start creating my own tea sets, which I eventually put in motion and now have. My tea sets are likely my proudest achievement thus far, I cannot believe I was able to design and manufacture them… they were daydreams at one point, and now they’re physical items that I get to hold and drink tea out of! and I have the opportunity to share them with all of you! Every part of the tea set is made with the highest quality materials I could get my hands on. I wanted these to be able to be passed down from generation to generation. With fast fashion and with items being made to break down, I wanted to create items the exact opposite intention. I believe items should have sentimental value and be made with love. The tea sets are a huge accomplishment for me! I was so nervous people wouldn't buy them, but they surprisingly became my best seller and it was truly a blessed experience.

Now about my faith:

I am a practicing Christian. I've always wanted to present myself as an "unconventional" Christ follower. (There are more gothic Christians than you realize!) I know a lot of the time, Christian's are perceived as something we truly aren't. Christian's often get a bad rep because a lot of these "so called Christians" have a holier than thou attitude. Which is COMPLETELY not at all how Christ has called us to be. My job is to spread the gospel, the love of Christ, and Biblical truth. Not to judge or berate people who aren't Christians. I want all types of people to feel safe and comfortable with me. I have been burned by other Christian's before, and it has always made me so angry that this happens. I always feel so frustrated knowing that this happens to non-Christians and it completely turns people away from the faith. I don't blame those who feel anger towards Christianity. And if you have ever experienced being burned by the "church", please know that Jesus Christ is not your bad experience. The "sinful" and "prideful" people within the church are. I promise you most Christian's aren't like that, and I want to be the person to show that. I am not perfect, but I will do my best to represent Christ to the best of my abilities and always to fall back on the Bible.

Now, my biggest ministry is being a prayer warrior for my followers and customers. For many of you who have followed me for a while, know that I offer prayer requests every so often on my instagram. Prayer requests always confidential and there is never any obligation for going into detail. This is a way for me to give back using my faith and also to show my care for others. Even though I post public about prayer requests every so often, please do not hesitate to reach out to me if prayer is needed. I bare no judgement and am always open.

If you have any specific questions to get to know more about me more, please feel free to comment and I may make another blog post answering those questions! A gentle reminder to please be respectful in the comments.

Much love and God bless,

Jená

I leave you with my favorite verses from the Bible:

"Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should." -Ephesians 6:10-20
